Backyard Microbeasts

As a result of the Covid-19 lockdown I’ve naturally spent a lot of time at home recently, and have ended up watching the insects in the garden. I was surprised by how many different types of creatures there were in a relatively small space, and when I started thinking about other animals I have seen in the garden in the past, the list grew even longer. One of the things I’ve found challenging about lockdown, is trying to carry on with normal things (like writing) when nothing feels very ‘normal’ at all. Doing something a little different and drawing these pictures has been a good way to keep some creative activity going, and I’ve had a lot of fun with them. And there are still even more microbeasts that I haven’t had a chance to draw yet…

*Some of the information and inspiration for the images above was thanks to “Which New Zealand Insect” By Andrew Crowe (2002).
